Are you looking for therapy in English in Nijmegen or the surrounding area? Perhaps you're struggling with anxiety, stress, low self-esteem or difficult experiences from your past. Or maybe you're having problems in your relationship and would like some professional support.
Talking about personal issues can be difficult enough. Being able to express yourself in a language you're comfortable with can make it easier to explain what you're feeling and experiencing.
I'm Wilbert Derks, an integrative therapist, EMDR therapist, ACT therapist and couples counsellor in Nijmegen. I offer individual psychotherapy, counselling and couples therapy in English.
My approach is personal, supportive and sometimes gently challenging. Together, we'll explore what's holding you back and how you can regain confidence in your own ability to move forward.
Individual therapy and counselling in English
Sometimes you reach a point in life where you feel stuck.
You may have tried different ways to deal with your problems, but nothing seems to make a lasting difference.
Perhaps you know what you would like to change, but don't know how to get there.
I offer English-speaking therapy and counselling for a variety of personal difficulties, including:
- Anxiety, panic attacks and phobias.
- Stress, burnout and work-related pressure.
- Depression and persistent low mood.
- Insecurity, low self-esteem and lack of confidence.
- Traumatic experiences and distressing memories.
- Grief, bereavement and loss.
- Relationship difficulties and interpersonal conflicts.
- Personal development, setting boundaries and questions about meaning and direction in life.
As an integrative therapist, I look at you as a whole person, rather than focusing only on your symptoms.
Together, we'll explore what's really troubling you, what you would like to change and which approach best suits your needs.
Psychotherapy, EMDR and ACT in English
Depending on your situation, I can use different therapeutic approaches.
Integrative psychotherapy helps you understand the difficulties you're facing and discover your own resources for change. We look at your thoughts, emotions, behaviour and personal experiences to find a way forward.
EMDR therapy can be helpful when you continue to suffer from traumatic or distressing experiences. The treatment focuses on reducing the emotional distress associated with difficult memories.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps you develop a different relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings, while giving more attention to what truly matters to you.
My aim is to tailor the therapy to your personal situation, rather than following the same approach with everyone.
Couples counselling in English
I also offer couples therapy in English for partners who are experiencing relationship difficulties.
Perhaps you keep having the same arguments, find it difficult to communicate or feel that you've gradually grown apart.
Maybe something has happened that has damaged the trust between you, or you're unsure how to move forward together.
During couples counselling, we explore the patterns that have developed in your relationship.
What happens when you disagree? What feelings and needs lie beneath your reactions? And what prevents you from connecting with each other in the way you would like?
I believe that couples often have more strength and potential for change than they realise.
My role is to help you recognise unhelpful patterns, understand each other's needs and find new ways to reconnect.
My approach – Rediscover your own strength
One thing I've learned through my work as a therapist is that people often have much more inner strength than they realise.
When you're struggling, it may feel as though you've lost access to that strength.
I help you explore what's getting in your way and discover how you can use your own abilities and resources to make changes.
My approach is personal and engaged. I listen carefully, ask questions and sometimes hold up a mirror to help you see things from a different perspective.
That can occasionally feel challenging, but I always take into account what you're ready for.
I also believe there's room for humour in therapy.
Whenever possible, I work with relatively short therapy programmes, with the aim of helping you gain enough insight and confidence to continue independently.
